Heavenletter: The Squeaky Wheel - God's advice on dealing with daily inconveniences & annoyances

Popular Posts:

This is something that I am usually pretty good about on a day-to-day basis.  However, when I am overly tired and haven't been good about keeping balance in my life to due family and work circumstances, this is one of the first things that creeps back in.  This article is a nice reminder and a great way of looking at life in general.

Also, here is a mantra I say when the daily frustrations of life are bogging me down:

'I AM' the obedient, intelligent activity in this mind and body; 'I AM' the governing power and do govern it harmoniously.

Peace and enjoy,

The Squeaky Wheel

God said:
Rise above the daily inconveniences. Inconveniences are only inconveniences. Annoyances are only annoyances. Frustration is only frustration. Who says that everything has to be smooth for you at every moment? You are not to give a high rating to the little matters that you let become big. Save yourself from daily frustration. Annoyances happen. You are the one who rates them as frustration. You are the one who says how momentous they are.
Most inconveniences will resolve themselves one way or another, or you resolve them. There are remedies. You have an important deadline, and your computer doesn’t cooperate. It is not the end of the world, although it may too often seem like that to you.
Tell Me, dear ones, when your computer connection starts to work just fine again, is your happiness quotient as big as your unhappiness quotient was? Probably not. Your jumping for joy doesn’t begin to jump to the height your frustration did. Is this not so?
Have you convinced yourself that the negative aspects of life are more noteworthy than the positive aspects of life? What would you do that for? It would appear that frustration makes the grade while smooth-running is just so-so and taken for granted. A thorn in your side seems to merit far more attention. It is as if you are under the spell of thorns.
A little difficulty gets your attention all right. Of course, you tend to think it is a mammoth difficulty. Change that around. Don’t let the squeaky wheel get all the grease. Give plaudits to all the matters that you presently take for granted. Consider them your children. Give them a pat on the back. Think big, beloveds. Details in life also deserve encouragement.
Thank God for smooth-running of the Universe, even the Universe of your immediate environment. And even if you stub your toe, thank God, you have a toe to stub.
If everything at the office seems to be an impediment today, thank God for all the times everything ran well. Be fair. Be fair-minded. A little appreciation goes a long way.
If you get a flat, don’t kick your tire. The tire did its best. Now, you do yours.
Frustration is not to be the master of your life. Flexibility and kindness -- let’s say it – are to be the masters of your life. Love is to be the master of your life. That is, you are to master love in the little things. This is your challenge. And this is your destiny. You are to be a good sport and take inconveniences graciously. Even a torrent of rain has its favorable aspects. It waters the flowers. It is small-sighted to think only of your personal convenience or inconvenience.
Deal well with the small matters. This flexes your muscles. Promote yourself to a higher grade of response. This is how you are to live day by day. This isn’t too much to ask of you, is it?
Be unspoiled, beloveds. Take life in your stride. No internal or external tantrums, agreed? If there is a day when you can’t seem to make your day-to-day life better, then make the lives of others around you better. Give someone else some good fortune. How quickly whatever you have been going through will settle down, that is: You will settle down. You will put your feet up and a pillow under your head, and you will recline, and you will know that life is good no matter what it looked like to you a moment ago.
Give yourself an idea that you are the blessed of the blessed. You can see the sun shine, and you can feel the fresh rain. It’s okay if your clothes, dried outside on the line earlier, get wet again. They will dry again. Nothing is lost. Everything is gained. You are moving forward. This is what you do. This is how you make progress. One foot after the other. And all is well, even when you are not convinced. If it is possible for you to see this wisdom later, you might as well see it now.

Archangel Gabriel: Gentleness

Popular Posts:

Something about this post from Marlene really hit home and resonated with me.  Thank you AAG!

Enjoy and Peace,

Archangel Gabriel: Gentleness, channeled by Marlene Swetlishoff, November 27, 2014

Let us have discourse on the quality of love known as gentleness.

This quality is discerned in an individual as one who is humble and gentle, someone who shows kindness in their nature, as someone who is peaceable and ready to do whatever is good and right.
They express true humility by not considering themselves as too good or too important for humble tasks. They endure injury from another with patience and without resentment, keeping their own feelings under control and by doing deeds that are done in the humility that comes from inner wisdom.

They have the noble ability to give way to the wishes of others by sometimes yielding all that is rightly their due. Like a gentle giant, they sacrifice their own rights for the sake of peace and out of love, generosity, and sympathy for the other individual. In all situations, they exhibit restraint, coupled with strength and courage.

A gentle person does not seek to make other people angry. Gentleness within an individual desires that no harm be done. A gentle person is a non-violent person who chooses to act in a way that does not harm others. They are aware that there are gentle ways to be assertive, that there are non-violent ways to stand up for what is right, and non-manipulative ways to lead and inspire others.
The gentle person shows true strength by staying cool and overriding their human ego tendencies to be right above all else. They think first and then respond in a way that will best help the other person to understand non-violent logic. Gentleness in an individual may lose a few battles, but it helps win the overall struggle.

A gentle response tends to create fewer enemies, and definitely more friends. Those who have an attitude of kindness by looking for ways that will benefit others will always treat others gently. This attitude can contribute much to the comfort of life and the peace of society by reducing friction between people.

Gentleness is self-control displayed in a calm spirit based on an unshakable confidence in God and the goodness in others. Many people think of gentleness in an individual as being weak, timid, or passive, but it is actually strength under control. It is this quality of love within that helps individuals to conquer themselves.

Gentleness of spirit in an individual allows one’s spirit to move through them, making them loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, and self controlled.
Gentleness is that quality which does not insist upon personal vindication. It does not always have to correct others and does not repay in kind. It does not return insult for insult and does not use force and intimidation to get one’s way.

Gentleness gains its strength from its steady and stable foundation of kindness. Daily practice of the qualities and virtues of generosity, compassion, mercy, gratitude, humility, and tolerance prepare an individual for the quality of gentleness.

Only strong people can be gentle, because gentleness restrains strength by love. When one thinks only of oneself and not also of others, then it is easy to hurt others unintentionally. It is only possible to be gentle with others when one has learned to be gentle, kind and compassionate with oneself.
Each individual speaks their words, and takes action, whether great or small, with the utmost gentleness possible. This thoughtful approach can serve as a model for others to emulate. The motivating power behind gentleness is always love – love of the other for whose sake one restrains oneself.

To behave in a gentle manner requires that one stays centered in one’s values and strength and in one’s reactions to change. Worry, fear and sudden outbursts of anger become a thing of the past.
One sleeps in peace because their conscience is clear. One’s tone of voice softens and one smiles more and expresses less criticism and instead gives more encouragement and empowerment to others.
Learning and living becomes a joyful experience where everyone’s gentleness is the rule of the day. Once one tastes the effect of gentleness in oneself and in others, one will never want their old way of relating to others back again.

In all things, it is best to be kind and loving with gentleness in one’s voice. This gentleness is a reflection of deep love. This love is so subtle that to be in the presence of such a gentle one can soothe an aching heart. Their words of wisdom can untangle the most confused mind.
One speaks gently and effortlessly in a simple and profound way. One’s message of love and truth which comes from the heart profoundly touches the hearts of others. It is wise to nurture one self from the inside out, to be in flow with life instead of resisting and delaying it.

One can freely acknowledge one’s present moment in its entirety. One can include every aspect of it, from the playful, joyful moments, and from the uncomfortable and challenging ones.
One acknowledges one’s accomplishments and enjoys little successes as they happen by celebrating with small rewards in that moment. They do not rush to the next thing by overlooking and postponing the celebration that acknowledges their victory. Slowing their life down by simplifying their tasks and making a commitment to doing less instead of more is being gentle with oneself.

Listening to one’s body and following its guidance by practicing mindful healthy eating is being gentle with oneself. Allowing and choosing to release and let go of the stories about the past that constantly keep replaying in one’s head is a powerful way of being gentle with oneself.
By saying no in a gentle way to the commitments that don’t serve their values, one is learning about the power of discernment and becoming deliberate in one’s choices. One must get rid of the old before one can take on the new by creating a daily time to relax and just be. One can avoid burn-out in one’s activities and their effect on one’s well being.

By following their intuition and listening to the gentle guidance from within them, one avoids overanalyzing the situations in one’s life to the point of exhaustion. Being gentle with oneself if one does not know all the answers is perfectly acceptable.
By following these precepts, one’s world takes on a different appearance, a world that is kinder, more meaningful, more abundant and more compassionate.

When each individual takes time to reconnect with their authentic self and the divinity within them, they are gentle with themselves and they accept all of their imperfections. When they replace fear with trust and learn to let go of the things they cannot control, they have learned to be gentle with themselves.

May each of you practice gentleness with yourselves and with the people around you, taking care as you walk gently in the world.

In Defense of Salt -

Popular Posts:

Great article explaining why we are told to stay away from CONVENTIONAL table salt as it is very bad for our bodies.  There are however, other salts that are beneficial to the body as explained in this article...

Peace and enjoy,

In defense of salt

In defense of salt
Salt: what Homer called “a divine substance” and Plato described as “especially dear to the gods.” The English word “salary” is even derived from the Latin word that was used to designate the allowance provided to Roman soldiers for buying salt, which was an extremely valued commodity. Oh, and let’s not forget the whole Gandhi salt march. The man walked 240 miles just to get his hands on this tasty crystal, for goodness’ sake! Yes, yes, it wasn’t so much about the salt as it was to stick it to the man, but regardless, salt has a hefty history. Somewhere along the timeline, though, things took a turn. Salt’s got a pretty bad rap around these parts nowadays. Many if not most doctors, nutrition and health practitioners, and even the government public health officials tell us to stay far far away. There are two reasons for this:
  1. The average individual consumes a great deal of processed foods, which contain extremely high levels of sodium. 77% of the sodium in the average diet comes from processed and restaurant foods, according to the CDC.
  2. Today’s common table salt has nothing in common with the real, natural salt the Greeks and Romans used.
The problem with today’s table salt
Table salt such as the kind that is commonly used today is “purified,” a process that involves a re-crystallization at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. As with pasteurization of milk and honey, this heating process depletes salt of its natural minerals and nutrients, altering the chemical structure of the salt. The refining process also involves the use of aluminum, ferro cyanide, and bleach. After this process, anti-caking compounds are added to the salt so that it will easily pour from a salt shaker. In many foreign countries, table salt is also fluoridated. In fact, table salt is 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% additives.
The health benefits of himalayan pink salt
Himalayan pink salt, on the other hand, is comprised of 85% sodium chloride and 15% natural minerals. Research has found that these pink salt crystals contain 84 essential minerals required by the human body, including calcium, chloride, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.
According to Dr. Mercola, the health benefits of unprocessed himalayan pink salt containing the 84 minerals include:
  1. Regulating the water content of your body
  2. Promoting a healthy pH balance of the cells, particularly brain cells
  3. Regulating blood sugar levels
  4. Absorbing of food particles through your intestinal tract
  5. Supporting respiratory health
  6. Promoting sinus health
  7. Preventing muscle cramps
  8. Promoting bone strength
  9. Regulating and the body’s natural sleep cycle
  10. Promoting vascular health and regulating blood pressure
So what do you say – time to make a switch to pink himalayan salt?

If you have cancer or know someone who does, please consider the Gerson Therapy as a viable treatment option...

The Gerson Therapy is a safe, natural treatment developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920s.The Therapy activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, coffee enemas and natural supplements. The Gerson Therapy treats the underlying causes of disease: toxicity and nutritional deficiency.
The Gerson Therapy is a non-specific treatment that effectively treats many different conditions by healing the body as a whole, rather than selectively targeting a specific condition or symptom.

Over the past 60 years, thousands of people have used the Gerson Therapy to recover from so-called “incurable” diseases, including:
  • Cancer (including melanoma, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, lymphoma, pancreatic cancer and many others)

2 more Divinely inspired songs from the 70's/80's

Popular Posts:

Many of the songs from the 60's, 70's and early 80's were divinely inspired with metaphors and lyrics about Love and Peace...Here are two that recently came into my awareness again.

When people keep repeating
That you'll never fall in love
When everybody keeps retreating
But you can't seem to get enough

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door

When everything feels all over
Everybody seems unkind
I'll give you a four leaf clover
Take all worry out of your mind

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door

I have the only key to your heart
I can stop you falling apart
Try today, you'll find this way
Come on and give me a chance to say

Let my love open the door, it's all I'm living for
Release yourself from misery
There's only one thing gonna set you free
That's my love, that's my love

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door

When tragedy befalls you
Don't let it drag you down
Love can cure your problems
You're so lucky I'm around

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart

Right Back Where We Started From

Right Back Where We Started From
Ooh, and it's alright an it's coming on
We gotta get right back to where we started from
Love is good, love can be strong
We gotta get right back to where we started from

Do you remember the day (that sunny day)
When you first came my way
I said, no one could take your place
And if you get hurt (if you get hurt)
By the little things I say
I can put that smile back on your face

Ooh, and it's alright and it's coming on
We gotta get it right back to where we started from
Love is good, love can be strong
We gotta get it right back to where we started from

A love like ours (a love like ours)
Can never fade away
You know it's only just begun
You gave me your love (gave me your love)
I just can't stay away, no, no
I know you are the only one

Ooh, and it's alright and it's coming on
We gotta get it right back to where we started from
Love is good, love can be strong
We gotta get it right back to where we started from

You gave me your love (gave me your love)
I just can't stay away, no
I know you are the only one
Ooh, you know it's alright and it's coming on

We gotta get it right back to where we started from
Love is good, love can be strong
We gotta get it right back to where we started from
It's alright and it's coming on

Love is good, love can be strong
We gotta get it right back to where we started from

Quantum Energy Generator (QEG) Open Source Free Energy Device to power your home

Popular Posts:

This is only the beginning...many free energy devices have been invented over the last 100 years and have been suppressed by oil/gas/utility corporations, government and the military.  It is time to free our selves in many ways ;-)  Enjoy...

small QEG-HopeGirl-logo
As Promised, here are the open sourced documents for a quantum energy generator. This has been made possible by the people and for the people. It is freely given to the world.

An average modern household requires 5-10KW of power  to operate. A conventional generator needs   15KW to produce 10KW of power.

To produce these 15KW of power we rely on gas, diesel, propane, coal or other products that can be metered creating profits for the oil industry.

130 years ago Nikola Tesla invented and patented an energy generator. This is a resonance machine that only needs 1KW of input power to produce 10KW of output power.  His patents are now in the public domain.

The Fix the World Organization has reproduced Teslas design with a few modern twists to generate the same results.   Our Quantum Energy Generator (QEG) provides 10KW of power output for less than 1KW input, which it supplies to itself.

We have freely given this technology to the people of the world.  We’ve open sourced a full set of instructions, user manual, schematics and parts list for any engineer to follow and reproduce the same results.

How the QEG works:
First we use a starting power source, such as an outlet or a crank to power the 1 horsepower motor. This motor spins the rotor in the generator core. The unique oscillator circuitry configuration in the generator core causes resonance to occur. Once the core achieves this resonance it can produce up to 10KW of power, which can then be run through an inverter to power the motor that spins the rotor. You can then unplug the motor from the original power source and the generator will power itself.
Cottage Industry Community Units specifically for the production of QEG’s are NOW developing in communities in 30+ countries.  The People are making their own free energy devices.

The QEG belongs to humanity now. Many will make further improvements and we will all co-develop this practical bridge technology together.

The QEG: For the People and By the People
Fix the World is currently traveling to Taiwan, London and Morocco for the month of April to help communities build QEG’s. Everything we have accomplished has been made possible by the donations of people like you. If you would like to help keep us going, every little bit helps! Please consider giving back and making a donation of any amount to the Fix the World Organization. By

Staying Calm at Equinox Spiritual Crossroads

I really was drawn to this article because of the title...go figure ;-)  Peace and blessings to you all!

Staying Calm at Equinox Spiritual Crossroads

-Understanding DNA-Level Blocks to Love-

by Selacia

There is something different in the air this year during the equinox gateway that officially began March 20. This energy gateway open through the weekend – its ripples felt long afterwards – is a kind of spiritual crossroads.

This current spiritual crossroads, impacting you and all of humanity, is an opportunity to initiate a significant change in course direction.

As you know, the world indeed needs to change course – in dramatic ways – for humanity to thrive and survive in subsequent generations. We are at that choice point now. We are deciding with our individual and joint energies what kind of world we will have.
The world you are here to help birth is a loving world – a place in which people have remembered that they are divine and that the most important thing is love. To birth this, we must choose love in an ongoing way – not from our minds, but from our hearts.

This choosing needs to occur all across the planet right now. Your role at this juncture is for you to personally choose love and to stay calm as you discover your own blocks to being the love that you are. Everyone has them, so this is not personal to you. These blocks to love often originate in past lives, leaving imprints in your DNA – surfacing during this life as you attempt to reclaim your power and your voice.

More than perhaps any year in the past half century, energy gateways like equinox contain within them an increased potential for shifting out of stuck places and for bringing to light key insights needed before you can take the next important steps of your journey. They are an opportunity to fearlessly face your spiritual crossroads of the moment.

5 Tips to Stay Calm
Here are five tips to stay calm at this unique spiritual crossroads. Invite your inner wisdom to speak to you as you read, helping you to connect with the most relevant and timely information.

First, when you feel shaky or uncertain, remember that you are building a brand-new foundation for your life and contributing to the revolutionary new template for a more loving humanity. Acknowledge yourself for this, stay present, and breathe!

Second, when you face a crossroads like this with amplified energy, the tempo of things may feel turned up and you may even feel a bit dizzy. Avoid losing your focus and getting caught up in the world’s illusions by staying grounded and in your heart. It is there that you can connect with the music of your soul, bringing that divine sound out into the world.

Third, remember that spiritual crossroads tend to magnify issues and to catalyze your intense desire to be all that you can be. Even if you don’t know exactly what that “is” right now, you could feel an amplified frustration that you aren’t yet at the next stage. Therefore, keep things simple. Complex situations and unknowables are best addressed from a balanced spiritual perspective that allows for simplicity and grace. You tap simplicity and grace by avoiding overthinking and making things a bigger deal than they really are.

Fourth, lighten up and think of the bigger picture. Stay calm by letting go of the need to know all the details of things. A less-serious approach will soothe your ruffled feathers and get things in perspective.

Fifth, know that it’s normal right now to sometimes feel immobilized by not knowing what’s going to happen. This is part of the spiritual path during these unique moments of time. The crazier things appear in the outer world, people’s doubts and fears tend to get catalyzed. When you are in fear, you may discount what you already know and worry that you are somehow “behind.” Calm yourself right now by remembering the truth: you are encoded at a DNA level to be here now and to discover how to fully express your divine power and authentic voice. You are no accidental visitor. There is a divine spark within you, along with a deep wisdom that will guide you through the unknowns and into the light.

John Yudkin: The man who tried to warn us about sugar -"Pure, White and Deadly"

Popular Posts:

Another great article exposing the TRUTH about processed white sugar and detrimental affects to our overall health.  Peace and Love, Mike

3 other great links on the topic of sugar:

Date: February 12, 2014

By: Julia Llewellyn Smith (Sidney Morning Herald)

A British professor's 1972 book about the dangers of sugar is now seen as prophetic. Then why did it lead to the end of his career?

A couple of years ago, an out-of-print book published in 1972 by a long-dead British professor suddenly became a collector's item.

Copies that had been lying dusty on bookshelves were selling for hundreds of pounds, while copies were also being pirated online.

Alongside such rarities as Madonna's Sex, Stephen King's Rage (written as Richard Bachman) and Promise Me Tomorrow by Nora Roberts; Pure, White and Deadly by John Yudkin, a book widely derided at the time of publication, was listed as one of the most coveted out-of-print works in the world.

Pure, White and Deadly.

How exactly did a long-forgotten book suddenly become so prized? The cause was a ground-breaking lecture called Sugar: the Bitter Truth by Robert Lustig, professor of paediatric endocrinology at the University of California, in which Lustig hailed Yudkin's work as ''prophetic''.

'Without even knowing it, I was a Yudkin acolyte,'' says Lustig, who tracked down the book after a tip from a colleague via an interlibrary loan. ''Everything this man said in 1972 was the God's honest truth and if you want to read a true prophecy you find this book... I'm telling you every single thing this guy said has come to pass. I'm in awe.''

Posted on YouTube in 2009, Lustig's 90-minute talk has received more than 4.1 million hits and is credited with kick-starting the anti-sugar movement, a campaign that calls for sugar to be treated as a toxin, like alcohol and tobacco, and for sugar-laden foods to be taxed, labelled with health warnings and banned for anyone under 18.

Lustig is one of a growing number of scientists who don't just believe sugar makes you fat and rots teeth. They're convinced it's the cause of several chronic and very common illnesses, including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes. It's also addictive, since it interferes with our appetites and creates an irresistible urge to eat.

This year, Lustig's message has gone mainstream; many of the New Year diet books focused not on fat or carbohydrates, but on cutting out sugar and the everyday foods (soups, fruit juices, bread) that contain high levels of sucrose. The anti-sugar camp is not celebrating yet, however. They know what happened to Yudkin and what a ruthless and unscrupulous adversary the sugar industry proved to be.

The tale begins in the Sixties. That decade, nutritionists in university laboratories all over America and Western Europe were scrabbling to work out the reasons for an alarming rise in heart disease levels. By 1970, there were 520 deaths per 100,000 per year in England and Wales caused by coronary heart disease and 700 per 100,000 in America. After a while, a consensus emerged: the culprit was the high level of fat in our diets.

One scientist in particular grabbed the headlines: a nutritionist from the University of Minnesota called Ancel Keys. Keys, famous for inventing the K-ration - 12,000 calories packed in a little box for use by troops during the Second World War - declared fat to be public enemy number one and recommended that anyone who was worried about heart disease should switch to a low-fat ''Mediterranean'' diet.

Instead of treating the findings as a threat, the food industry spied an opportunity. Market research showed there was a great deal of public enthusiasm for ''healthy'' products and low-fat foods would prove incredibly popular. By the start of the Seventies, supermarket shelves were awash with low-fat yogurts, spreads, and even desserts and biscuits.

But, amid this new craze, one voice stood out in opposition. John Yudkin, founder of the nutrition department at the University of London's Queen Elizabeth College, had been doing his own experiments and, instead of laying the blame at the door of fat, he claimed there was a much clearer correlation between the rise in heart disease and a rise in the consumption of sugar. Rodents, chickens, rabbits, pigs and students fed sugar and carbohydrates, he said, invariably showed raised blood levels of triglycerides (a technical term for fat), which was then, as now, considered a risk factor for heart disease. Sugar also raised insulin levels, linking it directly to type 2 diabetes.

When he outlined these results in Pure, White and Deadly, in 1972, he questioned whether there was any causal link at all between fat and heart disease. After all, he said, we had been eating substances like butter for centuries, while sugar, had, up until the 1850s, been something of a rare treat for most people. ''If only a small fraction of what we know about the effects of sugar were to be revealed in relation to any other material used as a food additive,'' he wrote, ''that material would promptly be banned.''

This was not what the food industry wanted to hear. When devising their low-fat products, manufacturers had needed a fat substitute to stop the food tasting like cardboard, and they had plumped for sugar. The new ''healthy'' foods were low-fat but had sugar by the spoonful and Yudkin's findings threatened to disrupt a very profitable business.

As a result, says Lustig, there was a concerted campaign by the food industry and several scientists to discredit Yudkin's work. The most vocal critic was Ancel Keys.

Keys loathed Yudkin and, even before Pure, White and Deadly appeared, he published an article, describing Yudkin's evidence as ''flimsy indeed''.

"Yudkin always maintained his equanimity, but Keys was a real a-------, who stooped to name-calling and character assassination,'' says Lustig, speaking from New York, where he's just recorded yet another television interview.

The British Sugar Bureau put out a press release dismissing Yudkin's claims as ''emotional assertions'' and the World Sugar Research Organisation described his book as ''science fiction''. When Yudkin sued, it printed a mealy-mouthed retraction, concluding: ''Professor Yudkin recognises that we do not agree with [his] views and accepts that we are entitled to express our disagreement.''

Yudkin was ''uninvited'' to international conferences. Others he organised were cancelled at the last minute, after pressure from sponsors, including, on one occasion, Coca-Cola. When he did contribute, papers he gave attacking sugar were omitted from publications. The British Nutrition Foundation, one of whose sponsors was Tate & Lyle, never invited anyone from Yudkin's internationally acclaimed department to sit on its committees. Even Queen Elizabeth College reneged on a promise to allow the professor to use its research facilities when he retired in 1970 (to write Pure, White and Deadly). Only after a letter from Yudkin's solicitor was he offered a small room in a separate building.

''Can you wonder that one sometimes becomes quite despondent about whether it is worthwhile trying to do scientific research in matters of health?'' he wrote. ''The results may be of great importance in helping people to avoid disease, but you then find they are being misled by propaganda designed to support commercial interests in a way you thought only existed in bad B films.''

And this ''propaganda'' didn't just affect Yudkin. By the end of the Seventies, he had been so discredited that few scientists dared publish anything negative about sugar for fear of being similarly attacked. As a result, the low-fat industry, with its products laden with sugar, boomed.

Yudkin's detractors had one trump card: his evidence often relied on observations, rather than on explanations, of rising obesity, heart disease and diabetes rates. ''He could tell you these things were happening but not why, or at least not in a scientifically acceptable way,'' says David Gillespie, author of the bestselling Sweet Poison. ''Three or four of the hormones that would explain his theories had not been discovered.''

''Yudkin knew a lot more data was needed to support his theories, but what's important about his book is its historical significance,'' says Lustig. ''It helps us understand how a concept can be bastardised by dark forces of industry.''

From the Eighties onwards, several discoveries gave new credence to Yudkin's theories. Researchers found fructose, one of the two main carbohydrates in refined sugar, is primarily metabolised by the liver; while glucose (found in starchy food like bread and potatoes) is metabolised by all cells. This means consuming excessive fructose puts extra strain on the liver, which then converts fructose to fat.

This induces a condition known as insulin resistance, or metabolic syndrome, which doctors now generally acknowledge to be the major risk factor for heart disease, diabetes and obesity, as well as a possible factor for many cancers. Yudkin's son, Michael, a former professor of biochemistry at Oxford, says his father was never bitter about the way he was treated, but, ''he was hurt personally''.

''More than that,'' says Michael, ''he was such an enthusiast of public health, it saddened him to see damage being done to us all, because of vested interests in the food industry.''

One of the problems with the anti-sugar message - then and now - is how depressing it is. The substance is so much part of our culture, that to be told buying children an ice cream may be tantamount to poisoning them, is most unwelcome. But Yudkin, who grew up in dire poverty in east London and went on to win a scholarship to Cambridge, was no killjoy.

''He didn't ban sugar from his house, and certainly didn't deprive his grandchildren of ice cream or cake,'' recalls his granddaughter, Ruth, a psychotherapist. ''He was hugely fun-loving and would never have wanted to be deprived of a pleasure, partly, perhaps, because he grew up in poverty and had worked so hard to escape that level of deprivation.''

''My father certainly wasn't fanatical,'' adds Michael. ''If he was invited to tea and offered cake, he'd accept it. But at home, it's easy to say no to sugar in your tea. He believed if you educated the public to avoid sugar, they'd understand that.''

Thanks to Lustig and the rehabilitation of Yudkin's reputation, Penguin republished Pure, White and Deadly 18 months ago. Obesity rates in the UK are now 10 times what they were when it was first published and the amount of sugar we eat has increased 31.5 per cent since 1990 (thanks to all the ''invisible'' sugar in everything from processed food and orange juice to coleslaw and yogurt). The number of diabetics in the world has nearly trebled. The numbers dying of heart disease has decreased, thanks to improved drugs, but the number living with the disease is growing steadily.

As a result, the World Health Organisation is set to recommend a cut in the amount of sugar in our diets from 22 teaspoons per day to almost half that. But its director-general, Margaret Chan, has warned that, while it might be on the back foot at last, the sugar industry remains a formidable adversary, determined to safeguard its market position.

Recently, UK food campaigners have complained that they're being shunned by ministers who are more than willing to take meetings with representatives from the food industry. ''It is not just Big Tobacco anymore,'' Chan said last year. ''Public health must also contend with Big Food, Big Soda and Big Alcohol. All of these industries fear regulation and protect themselves by using the same tactics. They include front groups, lobbies, promises of self-regulation, lawsuits and industry-funded research that confuses the evidence and keeps the public in doubt.''

Dr Julian Cooper, head of research at AB Sugar, insists the increase in the incidence of obesity in Britain is a result of, ''a range of complex factors''.

''Reviews of the body of scientific evidence by expert committees have concluded that consuming sugar as part of a balanced diet does not induce lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and heart disease,'' he says. If you look up Robert Lustig on Wikipedia, nearly two-thirds of the studies cited there to repudiate Lustig's views were funded by Coca-Cola.

But Gillespie believes the message is getting through. ''More people are avoiding sugar, and when this happens companies adjust what they're selling,'' he says. It's just a shame, he adds, that a warning that could have been taken on board 40 years ago went unheeded: ''Science took a disastrous detour in ignoring Yudkin. It was to the detriment of the health of millions.''
